The Meaning of Shachihata

In the Japanese language, every word carries a story. “Hata,” the Japanese word for “flag,” holds a special significance in the origins of the name Shachihata. By combining “Shachi” and “Hata,” the company created a name that reflects both cultural heritage and symbolic meaning.

The Shachi is a legendary creature in Japanese folklore, commonly found adorning the rooftops of castles and temples throughout the country. Depicted with the body of a carp and the head of a fierce tiger, the Shachi is said to possess the power to summon rain and protect buildings from fire. For this reason, it is traditionally portrayed with its tail raised skyward.

Shachihata’s original emblem featured a flag bearing the image of the Shachi. More than a company mark, the flag represented a connection to Japanese tradition and cultural identity.

Like the Shachi that stands atop some of Japan’s most treasured architectural landmarks, Shachihata is woven into the fabric of Japanese culture. Shachihata Inc. marked its 100th anniversary in 2025. Beyond manufacturing stamps, inks, and marking devices, the company serves as a bridge between tradition and innovation, preserving the essence of the past while developing real solutions for the modern world.
