A self-inking stamp keeps its text plate resting against a built-in ink pad and flips the plate face down each time you press. An Xstamper pre-inked stamp is re-inked by adding drops into the stamp itself, and our refill ink flows through micropores in the laser-engraved rubber. The right one depends on what you stamp, how often, and in which ink color.

This guide compares Xstamper pre-inked stamps with ClassiX self-inkers, which we also call "ClassiX by Xstamper." In our site's top menu, they appear as the Custom Pre-Inked Xstamper and Custom Self-Inking ClassiX collections.

How does a self-inking stamp work?

Inside one is an ink pad and a text plate on a moving frame. Our patent application for a "flip type" self-inking stamp (US 2016/0325573) describes the marking member as oriented upward and pressed against an ink pad while the stamp is idle. When you push down, the marking member is flipped while moving downward, so it comes out of the stamp body facing the paper. Let go and it returns to the pad for fresh ink.

That built-in pad is the defining part. To reach it on a ClassiX stamp, push the stamp down slightly, press the locking button(s), and slide the ink pad out; the inked side of the pad sits on the bottom. Custom ClassiX stamps come inked for up to 5,000 to 7,000 initial impressions and are re-inkable, and we offer replacement pads for custom ClassiX models.

The result is a self-inking stamp you can use again and again without reaching for a separate pad.

How does a pre-inked stamp work?

A pre-inked stamp prints through a porous stamp face. One of our U.S. patents (US 9,517,648) describes a porous impression die with an ink-permeable area that forms the seal pattern and an ink-impermeable area around it. A 2015 Hiragana Times profile of our company describes rubber mixed with salt, which is later dissolved to leave countless minuscule holes.

Xstamper pre-inked stamps in three common address sizes.

Xstamper refill ink is formulated to flow cleanly through the micropores of the Xstamper's laser-engraved rubber. Re-inking means adding drops of ink into openings in the stamp itself rather than onto a pad. We rate custom Xstamper stamps for an initial 50,000 impressions, and they are re-inkable.

Both lines come in ECO-GREEN versions: custom Xstamper ECO-GREEN mounts are made from at least 50% post-consumer content, and ClassiX ECO-GREEN stamps are made with over 50% recycled content by weight.

Which handles high-volume stamping?

Start with the published numbers. A custom Xstamper is rated for an initial 50,000 impressions; a custom ClassiX for up to 5,000 to 7,000 initial impressions. If you stamp the same message hundreds of times a day, that gap translates into how often someone on your team has to stop and re-ink.

Run the math for your own desk. At 200 impressions a week, you reach 5,000, the low end of the ClassiX range, in 25 weeks, or about six months. At the same pace, 50,000 impressions takes 250 weeks, close to five years. Those are initial figures for a fresh stamp, and both types can be re-inked after that.

The ClassiX design has its own advantage in a busy setting: the pad is a separate part. We offer ClassiX replacement pads by model, so a worn pad can be swapped rather than the whole stamp.

Think about the work, too. If you mark forms RECEIVED all day, comfort in the hand matters as much as ink capacity. The ClassiX handle is ergonomic and designed for durability and comfort. The published impression figures tell you how often each one asks for ink.

Which suits signatures, logos and fine detail?

Both custom lines can be personalized with a message, signature, logo and/or artwork. On custom Xstamper stamps, the stamp material is laser engraved to provide a sharp, consistent impression every time.

For a custom rubber stamp with a scanned signature or a small logo, check the proof at actual size before you order. Our guide on how to order a custom stamp walks through choosing a size, the online designer's artwork requirements and the proof step.

Ink type, colors and re-inking

Ink type and colors

Xstamper ink is oil-based and ClassiX ink is water-based; product pages such as the N14 and the P12 list the ink type. Custom Xstamper stamps come in red, black, blue, green, purple, orange, light blue, light green, pink, yellow and brown. Custom ClassiX stamps come in red, black, blue, green and purple. If you need orange, light blue, light green, pink, yellow or brown, those six are available only in Xstamper.

Keep the refill bottles matched to the stamp. ClassiX refill ink comes in 2 oz (59.18 ml) bottles in red, black, blue, green and purple, and you should always refill with the same color ink as the original stamp.

If the stamp goes on mail, choose an ink that contrasts clearly with the envelope. USPS Publication 25 says a printed address must contrast sufficiently with its background so processing machines can read it.

Re-inking each type

  • Self-inking (ClassiX): push down slightly, press the locking button(s), slide the pad out, and add a few drops of the same color ClassiX refill ink onto the pad. We recommend ClassiX refill ink only, as other inks may damage the stamp.
  • Pre-inked (Xstamper): remove the handle or slide out the impression cartridge, depending on the mount, and add drops of the same color Xstamper refill ink into the openings. Other ink can clog the micropores and void the Xstamper warranty.

Let the ink soak in before you stamp again. After re-inking, let an Xstamper pre-inked stamp sit up to 24 hours, and let a ClassiX pad saturate overnight. Our step-by-step guide on how to re-ink a stamp covers each mount.

Which should you buy? Quick picks

  • Return address for holiday cards: compare address sizes and colors first. See our guide to return address stamps for holiday cards.
  • The same short message all day: compare re-inking intervals. A custom Xstamper is rated for an initial 50,000 impressions; ClassiX pads can be refilled or replaced.
  • Signature or logo: both custom lines take signatures, logos and artwork. Check the proof at actual size.
  • Unusual ink color: pre-inked, since custom Xstamper stamps come in 11 colors.
  • A familiar desk stamp in black, blue or red: a ClassiX self-inking stamp such as the P13 (1" x 2-1/2") covers it.

Three questions to settle it

If you are still on the fence, answer these in order:

  1. What color do you need? If you need one of Xstamper's six additional colors, choose pre-inked.
  2. How many impressions a week? Multiply it out against the published figures (an initial 50,000 for custom Xstamper, up to 5,000 to 7,000 initial for custom ClassiX) and decide how often you are willing to re-ink.
  3. What size and detail? List the lines and any artwork, then compare impression sizes in both collections and check the proof at actual size.

With those three answers written down, compare the two collections side by side; the size and color you need will narrow the list quickly. Whichever you choose, keep a bottle of the matching refill ink with the stamp so nobody reaches for the wrong one later.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pre-inked stamp the same as a self-inking stamp?

No. A self-inking stamp has a separate ink pad inside, and the text plate flips from the pad to the paper each time you press, as our patent application for a flip-type stamp describes. With an Xstamper pre-inked stamp, you add refill ink into openings in the stamp itself, and that ink flows through micropores in the laser-engraved rubber.

How many impressions does a self-inking stamp make before it needs ink?

Our custom ClassiX self-inking stamps come inked for up to 5,000 to 7,000 initial impressions and are re-inkable. Custom Xstamper pre-inked stamps are rated for an initial 50,000 impressions, also re-inkable. Treat these as starting figures and re-ink when impressions start to look light rather than counting presses.

Can I use any ink to refill my stamp?

No. Use the refill ink made for your stamp, in the same color as the original. In an Xstamper, other ink can clog the micropores in the rubber and void the Xstamper warranty, and for ClassiX we recommend ClassiX refill ink only because other inks may damage the stamp. Xstamper ink is oil-based and ClassiX ink is water-based (product pages such as the N14 and the P12 list the type), so the two are not interchangeable.

Can a custom rubber stamp include a logo or signature?

Yes, on both lines. Custom Xstamper and custom ClassiX stamps can each be personalized with a message, signature, logo and/or artwork. Before you approve the order, check the proof at actual size to make sure fine lines in the signature or logo still read clearly. Our custom stamp ordering guide covers the online designer's artwork requirements and how to choose a size.

Can you replace the pad on a self-inking stamp?

On ClassiX stamps, yes. We offer replacement ink pads by model for custom ClassiX stamps, and the pad in ClassiX models such as the P12 is refillable and replaceable. To reach it, push the stamp down slightly, press the locking button(s) and slide the pad out. Refill it with the same color ClassiX ink, or swap in a new pad when the old one is worn.

Which stamp type comes in more ink colors?

Pre-inked. Custom Xstamper stamps come in 11 colors: red, black, blue, green, purple, orange, light blue, light green, pink, yellow and brown. Custom ClassiX stamps come in five: red, black, blue, green and purple. If the stamp goes on mail, choose an ink that contrasts clearly with the envelope; USPS asks for enough contrast between the printed address and its background for its machines to read it.
